Tan Cheng Cheng was raised in Penang where she briefly attended the Penang Art Studio from 1960 - 1961 and studied Oil Painting at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Singapore.
Tan specialized in Oil, Watercolor, Chinese Brush Paintings. She began with painting watercolor Orchids, which she was renowned for. She later experimented with mixed mediums, using a blend of oil, acrylic, and watercolor on abstract interpretations of floral forms. She has exhibitions held in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and Indonesia and Australia.
Tan has been involved with numerous exhibitions; Budding Artists Exhibition (1987); Solo Chinese Brush Painting Exhibition in Singapore and Johor Bahru, Malaysia (1991); Asia Invitation Art Exhibition in Seoul (1992); Participated in the Female Artists Chinese Brush Painting Art Exhibition in Bangkok (1994); Singapore Watercolor Painting Exhibition in Anhai, China (1999); Attended an immersion oil painting course in the International Art Education Exchange Centre of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, China (1999); 14th International Watercolour Exhibition of Asia in Xuchang, China (2000), Asia Pacific Watercolour Painting Exhibition in Taiwan (2001); solo watercolour painting exhibition "Fascination with Orchids" in Singapore (2001); One of the 4 participants in a watercolour exhibition "Beyond the Colours" held in Perth, Australia (2002); invited to exhibit her works by Ekspres, PPC at Jakarta National Gallery, Indonesia (2004); solo watercolour painting exhibition "Orchid Boulevard" in Singapore (2013), organised the "Orchids Bonanza" Fundraising Special Painting Exhibition (2012); as well as the "Commemorating NS50 Through Art" Exhibition in Singapore (2017) and participated in the "Heroes of our Time" Art Exhibition co-organised by the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Singapore and Singapore Art Society (2021).
She has received numerous awards, such as the 1st Prize in the 3rd National Painting & Calligraphy Competition organised by Outram Park Art Club (1986), Awarded Merit Award in a competition organized by the Ministry of Communications Singapore (1989), received the Distinction Award in Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Western Art Award (2003), received two Distinctions in the Western Painting (Representational) and (Contemporary) Awards from Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Western Art Awards 2010.
She is also a member of the Singapore Art Society, Penang Art Society, Tanjong Pagar Art Club, The Orchid Society of South East Asia (OSSEA) and The Society of Chinese Artists.
Tan's work belongs to multiple collections; including the National Museum, Singapore Economics Development Board, Agri-Food & Veterinary of Singapore, Ministry of Defence, Bukit Batok East Community Club for presentation to the Prime Minister of Singapore (Goh Chok Tong) on the official opening of the Community Club, and other private collectors.
Tan currently lives and operates in Singapore.
